{"id":1339,"date":"2015-10-19T10:23:52","date_gmt":"2015-10-19T09:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.andrewwickscreative.co.uk\/clients\/nsif-dev\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1339"},"modified":"2026-03-17T11:48:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T11:48:43","slug":"wearensif","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewwickscreative.co.uk\/clients\/nsif-dev\/news\/wearensif\/","title":{"rendered":"#wearensif"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Where will we be \u2013 one year from now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>One year ago this week, it emerged in the media that scientists believed they had recorded the reconnection of severed long spinal nerve fibres for the first time.<\/strong> This followed groundbreaking work by Professor Geoffrey Raisman and Dr. Pawel Tabakow, as well as their incredible teams. Through cell transplantation surgery and intensive rehabilitation, the scientists were able to restore assisted walking and some sensation to one patient. This patient was Darek Fidyka, and <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>nsif<\/strong><\/span> was a key funder of the research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">After becoming completely paralysed from the chest down, following a knife attack that resulted in full spinal cord transection, Darek was told his chances of recovering any sensation or movement were negligible.<strong> Two years after pioneering surgery, he has recovered some bladder and bowel sensation and sexual function, and can now walk with assistance.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Speaking to BBC Panorama, Darek recalled: \u201c<em>When it starts coming back, you feel as if you\u2019ve started your life all over again, as if you are born again.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Professor Raisman described the breakthrough as \u201c<em>more impressive than man walking on the moon<\/em>\u201d.
